Fabulous victory by Nadine Horchler in Anterselva

Date: 21.01.2017

A German success in the women's mass start race was foreseeable. The big surprise even for the greatest experts was that the winner was not Laura Dahlmeier but Nadine Horchler.

Nadine Horchler, 30 years old, from Northern Hesse, never succeeded to climb a World Cup podium in her long career. In the last individual women's race in the Südtirol Arena Alto Adige she actually was only registered as a reserve and got into the starting field only in the last minute. "Already this was a surprise", comments Horchler. Almost nobody had noticed her start. Only as the race already was in full swing she came into the limelight. In the shooting range she displayed a flawless performance and in the final round she chased Gabriela Koukalova (Czech Republic) who has won all mass start races this season up to now. Horchler accomplished an impressing overtake and crossed the finish line first. In the winner interview, Horchler describes these moments as follows: "All of the stadium was exulting, I could no longer hear my own heartbeat. I have never experienced something like this. I am overwhelmed."

In the finish, Koukalova was also overtaken by the overall World Cup leader Laura Dahlmeier, who realized thus a perfect double win for Germany. Up to the last shooting Dahlmeier was in the lead, but then she missed two targets.

Runggaldier shines again

Horchler was not the only surprise of Saturday afternoon. After her sensational third place in the individual race, Alexia Runggaldier achieved another top ten result. The South Tyrolean missed only one target and was really strong on the track again. In the end she came in sixth, which is her second best World Cup result.

The other Italian athletes did not perform that well in the mass start. Dorothea Wierer had to run the penalty loop four times and came in 17th. Federica Sanfilippo finished 29th with seven missed shots.
