Every single step has to be perfect and every phase of the project, no matter how small, has to flow seamlessly into the next. It’s no different to an adrenaline-charged relay race—and calls for every bit as much focus and commitment: around 45,000 working hours with up to 50 workers per day, excavations of nearly 23,000 cubic metres, 500,000 kg of fabricated structural steel, roughly 9,000 metres of pipelines and a good 5,500 cubic metres of concrete, poured non-stop from 4 in the morning through to 8 at night.

And everything went according to plan—except for the winter itself which, with 60 cm of snowfall, abandoned the schedule on the last working day before handover. But even this misadventure did not throw the general construction company from the Pustertal Valley off track: it was, after all, just one extra lap before the finishing line. Just like a biathlon.
