20.01.2024 - Antholz trembles: Germany dominates the single mixed relay
One of the most spectacular competitions at this year's Biathlon World Cup took place in the Südtirol Arena in Antholz on Saturday: the Single Mixed Relay.
More than 20,000 spectators cheered on the biathletes from Germany, with the Norwegian and Austrian relay teams rounding off the podium. Italy narrowly missed out on the podium and finished in 4th place.
Germany dominated the single mixed relay today. The race handed in by the duo Vanessa Voigt and Justus Strelow was simply picture-perfect. Their fantastic efforts at the shooting range (eight shots, only one miss from Strelow) and their brilliant performance on the cross-country course brought the Südtirol Arena to its feet with thousands of fans from Germany. Rarely has a single-mixed relay team managed such a magnificent feat. In the end, Germany came out on top in 38.58 minutes.
Needless to say, no other nation stood a chance against Germany today. Top favourite Norway (Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold/Vetle Sjaastad Christiansen) took second place, 11.2 seconds behind. Meanwhile, the Austrian duo of Lisa Theresa Hauser and Simon Eder produced a sensational performance, finishing in 3rd place with zero reloads (four misses).
Passler and Hofer just miss out on the podium
Host nation Italy, on the other hand, narrowly missed a podium finish. The duo of Rebecca Passler/Lukas Hofer made a few too many mistakes at the start, but still finished in a strong fourth place with one penalty loop (six misses). The biathletes from South Tyrol were only 10 seconds off bronze at the finish.
On Saturday, this fantastic biathlon event will continue in the Südtirol Arena in Antholz with the mixed relay. The start is scheduled for 2:45 pm.
