21.01.2023 - Denise Herrmann-Wick triumphs in Antholz
The Germans had plenty to celebrate on Saturday afternoon during the Biathlon World Cup at the Südtirol Arena in Antholz.
Denise Herrmann-Wick won the women's 10 km pursuit ahead of local Lisa Vittozzi and Sweden's Elvira Öberg after a nail-biting race that was decided only during the final standing shooting stage.
Denise Herrmann-Wick set the biathlon centre in the Antholz Valley, which was completely packed with 15,000 spectators, on fire. With a very strong performance, the 34-year-old from Bockau fought her way from 6th place in the sprint to the top and was rewarded with her second victory of the season. She had already won the sprint in Hochfilzen in December.
Herrmann-Wick began the pursuit with a deficit of 23 seconds. In spite of penalty loops during the second and third shooting stages, she still managed to be among the front runners. She won the race during the last standing stage. Herrmann-Wick was flawless, but her competitors Dorothea Wierer (2), Marte Olsbu Roeiseland (2) and Elvira Öberg (1), who were on the same level, made mistakes. In the final kilometres, the German kept her composure and won ahead of Lisa Vittozzi. The Italian delivered a brilliant performance in her home arena, shot cleanly and fought her way up to 2nd place after finishing 13th in the sprint. In the end she was only 11 seconds behind the winner.
The battle for 3rd place, which Elvira Öberg won, was extremely exciting. The Swedish overall World Cup runner-up was very strong on skis today and secured bronze ahead of her sister Hanna. Marte Olsbu Roeiseland came in 5th, Marketa Davidova from the Czech Republic 6th.
Dorothea Wierer 7th, Passler also brilliant
The winner of the sprint, Dorothea Wierer, just missed the podium. The 32-year-old from Rasen competed with Herrmann-Wick and Roeiseland for the day's victory in the last standing stage, but then she missed two targets and slipped down to 7th place in the final ranking.
Rebecca Passler also performed well. The young biathlete from Antholz, who started from position 54, fought her way up 26 places and finished 28th with two misses. Her teammate Hannah Auchentaller, also from Antholz, was 33rd, the fifth "Azzurra" Samuela Comola finished 40th.
The men's pursuit race will take place at the Südtirol Arena at 3 pm. On Sunday, the World Cup stage in Antholz will be completed with the relay races.
