21.01.2023 - The new king of Antholz: Johannes Thingnes Bø
The juggernaut Johannes Thingnes Bø from Norway clearly left his unmistakable mark on the Biathlon World Cup in Antholz:
After his sprint victory on Friday, he also won the 12.5 km pursuit the following day proving once again that he is virtually unbeatable this year. With this double victory, Johannes Thingnes Bø was crowned the new king of Antholz.
Bø was not without mistakes at the shooting range today, but his undisputed supremacy was still undeniable. The 29-year-old, who has been living and training in the winter sports mecca Lillehammer (Norway) for many years, made his competitors look quite ordinary in cross-country skiing. Despite two shooting mistakes, Bø crossed the finish line with a clear lead of 40.2 seconds. The Scandinavian might even achieve the triple result with the Norwegian relay team on Sunday. Overall, he achieved his 9th victory in Antholz today.
With this success, the 14th in 17 races this season (including relay races), Bø extended his lead in the overall World Cup standings. Sturla Holm Laegreid, his countryman and 3rd-place finisher in the sprint, posed the greatest threat to the season's dominant star today. Though the Norwegian stayed clean at the shooting range, he never really put Bø under pressure. Sweden's Martin Ponsiluoma, yesterday's runner-up, returned to the podium in 3rd place, 1:07 minutes behind. Roman Rees from Germany came in fourth as he did in the sprint, and Johannes Dale moved up from 15th to 5th place.
Tommaso Giacomel narrowly out of the top ten
Tommaso Giacomel was once again the best competitor for the Italian team. The skier from Trentino, who has been so consistent this winter, came in 12th after finishing 7th on Friday and missing four targets at the shooting range. Giacomel's teammates Didier Bionaz and Elia Zeni had to settle for 29th and 51st place respectively.
The Antholz World Cup week will conclude on Sunday with the women's (11:45 am) and men's (2:30 pm) relay events.
