22.01.2022 - The crowning conclusion in Antholz
A fantastic week of biathlon in Antholz will end on Sunday with the men’s relay and the women’s mass start.
The best men (from 12:15) and women (15:15) will battle it out for the final stage victories in the Südtirol Arena.
They will begin at lunchtime with the men’s race, where Norway and Russia are equal favourites. The Scandinavian men's quartet won gold in Östersund and Hochfilzen this winter. In Ruhpolding, however, they only made 7th place. The Russians, on the other hand, stood on the podium every single time: After two third places, Alexandr Loginov & Co. made the top of the podium for the first time in Ruhpolding. The Russian team presents itself in top form in Antholz and will surely be among tomorrow’s front runners.
Among the strongest opponents of these two nations are the French and German quartets. The "Bleus" finished second in Östersund and Hochfilzen, the DSV squad celebrated silver in Ruhpolding, and finished fourth in Östersund and Hochfilzen. As a result, France and Germany are in third and fourth place in the World Cup rankings, behind the Norway-Russia duo, who are tied on points. The Italians in the team with Lukas Hofer and Dominik Windisch will have a hard time fighting for a podium finish on the 4x7.5 km course with two shooting stages each.
The women will start at 15:15. In the mass start over 12.5 km the overall World Cup 11th Julia Simon starts in the red jersey. The 25-year-old French athlete, second in the individual competition, took silver in the only mass start of the season in Annecy. But as Elvira Öberg is not taking part in Antholz, Simon is the one in front. Individual winner Justine Braisaz-Bouchet, on the other hand, is aiming for a personal double in the Südtirol Arena. Dorothea Wierer is also a serious challenger: The 31-year-old from Rasun di Sotto revealed a very good form at the foot of the Vedrette di Ries, which she now wants to confirm in the mass start. After a fifth place in the individual event, she now aims for the podium. Wierer has already made it into the top ten nine times this season, in her home race in Antholz she is aiming for her second place on the podium. Marketa Davidova from the Czech Republic and the Belarussian Dzinara Alimbekava must also be taken into account after their good performances in the individual race, as must Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold and Tyrolean Lisa Theresa Hauser.
