23.01.2021 - Julia Simon wins Antholz Mass Start Competition
Julia Simon from France has won the mass start competition of the biathlon world cup Antholz in a thrilling finish against Hanna Öberg from Sweden.
The 24-year-old from Albertville who started this race with the red bib has shown a remarkable performance on the course in today’s mass start. While Simon missed three targets in the two prone shootings, she shot clean in standing position. She engaged in a thrilling fight with Hanna Öberg, Lisa Theresa Hauser and Franziska Preuss on the final leg. First maxed-out Hauser and Preuss had to give in, then she beat Öberg head-to-head by 20 hundredth of a second. It has been the third world cup triumph after winning the pursuit competition in Kontilahti and the Oberhof mass start.
Lisa Theresa Hauser from the Tyrol has made it to the podium once again. The 27-year-old from Reith who has won Thursday’s individual competition came in third, trailing Simon by 3.5 seconds. The fourth place went to Franziska Preuss (+9.0 seconds) from Germany. Svetlana Mironova from Russia who has been leading the rest of the field by 12.5 seconds with a clean shooting until the final shooting bout missed two targets and had to settle for the sixth place in the end, in front of world cup total score leader Marte Olsbu Roeiseland and Tiril Eckhoff.
Dorothea Wierer misses five targets
Local hero Dorothea Wierer did not have a chance today. The 30-year-old from Niederrasen did not have her best of days and missed a total of five targets. While her skiing performance was good, she had to settle for 17th place in the end. The Azzurra” taking on today’s race, Lisa Vittozzi from Sappada, who missed four targets finished in 27th place.
Today’s program of the Antholz biathlon world cup will continue at 15.05h with the relay competition men. Tomorrow the world cup week will finish with the relay competition women and the mass start men.
