'Open fire' for rhe sprint competition

Entirely in keeping with the motto ‘Ladies first’, it's the ladies who kicks off the Biathlon World Cup in Antholz on 19 January 2023 with the women’s sprint race. Will it be an outsider or rather a favourite athlete who masters the 7.5 km distance?

Get ready for the 7.5-km women’s sprint race, in which the ladies come together for the first time. A look at last year’s World Cup reveals that it is difficult to predict who will finally be competing right at the front.

ALL ABOUT THE SPRINT
While the women ski 7.5 km and the men 10 km in sprint competitions, the format is exactly the same: it's a time-trial competition with two shooting stages, 1 prone and 1 standing. Each missed target results in a penalty loop of 150m. Competitors start at 30-second intervals, but under particular circumstances, the jury can opt for longer or shorter intervals. The winner is determined by the fastest time at finish, which means in principle that any start number can be the winner.
